E d Emanuels, a Steward at Safeway in Carmichael, doesn’t have a teaching credential, but that doesn’t stop him from instructing younger members about the importance of the Union.“I consider myself a teacher and take new members under my wing to help them learn the ropes,” Emanuels said. “I try to help new members understand that we must do whatever we can to support the Union and demonstrate our solidarity at every opportunity. If we do that, there is no limit to what we can accomplish.” Emanuels began his career at a Bel Air market in Sacramento in 1963. He left in 1966 to join the Army.
‘I’ve never had an issue go above the store level. My managers respect me because they know I’m fair. Both sides have to live up to the Union contract.’
After serving three years in Viet Nam, he returned home but decided to pursue another line of work. “I was in sales for about 11 years, selling one thing or another,” he recalled. |
“That’s where I formed my views about the importance of the Union. “I saw people fired for any or no reason. Why, you could even be fired because someone didn’t like the way you smiled.” He returned to work in the supermarket industry in 1980 and became a Steward 10 years later. Emanuels finds his three decades of Union service useful in his role as Steward. “I know the contract fairly well and that makes it easier for me to resolve any issue that comes up,” he said. “I’ve never had an issue go above the store level. My managers respect me because they know I’m fair. Both sides have to live up to the Union contract.”Emanuels also likes to help people in his spare time. He is a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Rio Linda, where he has served on the Church Council and was instrumental in the church becoming involved in the Family Promise program.“We are one of a number of churches in the area that take in a homeless family until they can get back on their feet,” Emanuels said. “These are families that have lost their jobs and their homes, families like yours or mine, who need a helping hand to tide them over.”He plans to retire in the near future and looks forward to spending more time with his family, including his only grandchild, who was born in October 2008. “I’ve always had an artistic bent,” Emanuels said. “ So I also plan to take an art class and paint whatever and whenever I can.” |
